2009 Belmont Stakes
The Belmont Stakes is one of the most famous horse race around the United States, the third leg of the Triple Crown series. It can be consider as the third race in popularity around the country. Normally it takes place every June and this year is listed to be taking place this up coming June 6th at the Belmont Park course located in Elmont, New York.
The Belmont Stakes, the final and most demanding race of the Triple Crown, is named after August Belmont who had been a leading banker and racing man of the 19th century. He was also the first President of the Jockey Club in 1867.
The Belmont Stakes is also called the "Run for the Carnations" because of the blanket of white carnations that is draped over the winner's neck. Through 1996, the post parade song was "Sidewalks of New York." Beginning in 1997, the audience was invited to sing the Theme from “New York, New York” following the call to the post. This tradition mirrors the singing of two other songs at the post parades of the first two Triple Crown races, “My Old Kentucky Home” at the Kentucky Derby and “Maryland, My Maryland” at the Preakness Stakes.
Results :
The Belmont Stakes had a really happy ending. The winner of the Kentucky Derby didn’t win this race as expected. The winner this time was Summer Bird with jockey Kent J. Desormeaux. The second place was earned by Dunkirk with jockey John R. Velásquez and the third place to the Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird with jockey Calvin H. Borel. Definitely a good outcome for the event, we will have to wait for next year event to see if one horse can win all the series.
